The Metcalf Buiding, which was dedicated
in 1985, was so named to honor U. S. Senator Lee Metcalf's
longstanding dedication to preserving Montana’s unsurpassed
natural resources.
A native of Stevensville, Lee Metcalf (1911–1978)
served in the Montana House of Representatives, as assistant
attorney general for the State of Montana, in the U.S.
army, as an associate justice of the Montana Supreme Court,
in the U.S. House of Representatives, and in the U.S. Senate
for a combined total of 42 years of public service. Although
concerned with a variety of issues, he is most readily
identified with his efforts to protect the natural environment
and regulate utilities.
