The ten paintings in this room are by Ralph
Earll DeCamp (1858 - 1936). He was a Montanan and Helena resident for the
last 50 years of his life. The DeCamp home in Helena was a mecca for art and music
lovers of Helena, and the artist was a friend and associate of many who portrayed
the Western scene, among them Charles
Russell. Russell is reported to have said of DeCamp the "he painted sagebrush
so you could smell it." His paintings are physically correct as he took pictures
(black and white) of the places he desired to paint and his paintings are on scale
made from those photos. He made preliminary drawings and colors at the scene.
A virtual tour of
the Law Library is also available. You'll be able to navigate through the Law
Library, seeing the paintings and stained glass as they actually are in the room.
