Introduction:

The Montana Capitol Complex Commission decides which statues, busts, photos and displays will be placed in the Montana State Capitol. The Commission has invited each of these Montana organizations to nominate a person in Montana's history to be placed in one of four niches in the Capitol rotunda.

One of these organizations has hired you to research history relating to the organization, select a qualified person related to that organization and prepare a presentation for the Commission's meeting so that you can convince the commissioners that this person deserves the honor. You will visit a number of web sites which focus on your area of research and you will seek out additional resources in the library.

Task:

Your task is:

  1. To choose which organization you will represent.
  2. To decide if you will work with others or work alone.
  3. Research the web sites listed for your organization and category, as well as find other resources in the library to select a person who deserves to be remembered in the State Capitol.
  4. Write a letter to the Capitol Complex Commission nominating your person and requesting a time to present your information.
  5. Create a presentation in Powerpoint which presents the information you have found.
  6. Present the evidence to the class.

Process:

There are three main parts to this project:

Phase 1: Gaining Background Knowledge
Visit the sites listed for the Montana State Capitol so that you understand the building and restorations of the capitol and the job of the Capitol Complex Commission.

Phase 2: Collecting Information
This is where you take on one of the roles and explore the related Internet links.
1. Choose a role (one person per role) You will serve as a consultant to one of the following organizations:

  • Montana Arts Council
  • Montana Association of Conservation Districts
  • Montana Association of Realtors
  • Montana Bankers Association
  • Montana Building Industry Association
  • Montana Chamber of Commerce
  • Montana Contractors Association
  • Montana Dental Association
  • Montana Education Association/Montana Federation of Teachers
  • Montana Farmers Union
  • Montana Grain Growers Association
  • Montana Health Care Association
  • Montana Hospital Association
  • Montana Innkeepers Association
  • Montana Medical Association
  • Montana Motor Carriers Association
  • Montana Newspaper Association
  • Montana Nurses Association
  • Montana Outfitters and Guides Association
  • Montana Petroleum Association
  • Montana Society of CPA's
  • Montana Stockgrowers Association
  • Montana Taxpayers' Association
  • Montana Telecommunications Association
  • Montana United Indian Association
  • Montana Wilderness Association
  • Montana Wildlife Federation
  • Montana Wood Products Association
  • Montana Wool Growers Association
  • State Bar of Montana
  • Veterans of Foreign Wars - Montana

2. Decide whether you will work alone or in a group with other roles that belong to the same category.
3. Surf the links related to your role.
4. Follow your interest and what strikes you.
5. "Collect" (copy and paste) text or images from the Web into a Media Scrapbook. Images such as photographs, maps, stories, facts, quotations, sound clips, videos, virtual reality tours, etc. can give you the information you need for your final presentation to the commission.
6. Note the location (URL) of each thing you borrow.

Phase 3: Creating Learning Products
Now that you (and your group, if you are working in a group) have collected information, graphics, and sound for a historic Montana person, it's time to meet the challenge of extending and refining your thinking. You will now organize the information into a powerpoint presentation in which you will try to convince a panel of experts that your person is deserving of a memorial in the Montana State Capitol. On the last page of the presentation, remember to record the URL's of the sites and print sources from which you've borrowed.
